Eldritch Altars have two variants, Red (Searing Exarch) and Blue (Eater of Worlds). They are followed with their respective Atlas passive points, guardians after a certain amount of maps have been done and in the end the big boss encounters. These are also required to obtain two Voidstones that will increase the map tiers on the Atlas.
